Use steel slag for clinker, cement production
Pilot implemented by using 10,000 mt materials reducing emissions
Emsteel aims 40% emission reduction in steel, 30% in cement by 2030
UAE-based steel and building materials manufacturer Emsteel Group has signed a strategic partnership with Finnish steel slag processor Magsort to use steel slag at scale as raw material for clinker and cement production, Emsteel said in a May 29 statement.
The agreement follows Emsteel's successful implementation of an industrial-scale pilot for decarbonized cement production at its Al Ain facility by using 10,000 mt of carbon-reduced materials, which were developed by incorporating steel slag, it said.
To address the growing local demand for low-carbon cement, an integrated line will be built at the plant to process steel residue and refine materials sourced from its steel plant in Abu Dhabi.
The initiative, a core component of Emsteel's decarbonization strategy, was expected to directly contribute to reducing Scope 1 emissions.
Emsteel aims for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in its steel business unit and a 30% reduction in its cement business unit by 2030, with a goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
By transforming steel slag into a valuable input for cement, the company was cutting emissions and proving the commercial value of industrial circularity, Emsteel CEO Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi said.
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed Turkish imports of premium heavy melting scrap 1/2 (80:20) at $347/mt CFR May 28, unchanged day over day.
