December global primary aluminum output rose 4.22% on year: IAI

London — Global primary aluminum production grew to 5.67 million mt in December, up 4.22% on the year, accompanying continuing demand growth, the International Aluminium Institute reported Jan. 20.

Average daily output during the month at 182,900 mt was nonetheless 0.33% lower than in November 2020, IAI said.

Estimated production in China was 3.28 million mt in the month of December, while Africa produced 135,00 mt, North America 338,000 mt, South America 93,000 mt, Asia excluding China 363,000 mt, Western Europe 281,000 mt, East and Central Europe 352,000 mt, Oceania 163,000 mt and Gulf Cooperation Council countries was 495,000 mt, IAI said in a statement.

IAI Secretary General Miles Prosser was cited as saying that the December data "continues to show that aluminium production has been sustained through the Covid pandemic," due to aluminum's essential role in the global economy.

In the whole of 2020, global primary aluminum production reached 65.27 million mt, slightly up from 63.66 million mt in 2019, according to IAI data.

In 2020, China produced 37.32 million mt of primary aluminum, GCC 5.83 million mt, East & Central Europe 4.15 milllion mt, Asia excluding China 4.14 million mt, North America 3.97 million mt, Western Europe 3.33 million mt, Africa 1.6 million mt, South America 1.008 million mt, and other nations around 2 million mt, IAI said.
