Energy Transition, LNG, Natural Gas, Renewables
June 11, 2025
By Surabhi Sahu and Staff
Australia, among the world's top LNG exporters, is a critical gas supplier for Asia. Some overseas buyers of Australian LNG are also investors in its gas projects.
In 2024, LNG exports comprised 80%, domestic power generation about 9.1% and local industrial usage around 7% of Australia's total gas demand.
The country's Future Gas Strategy recognizes gas' long-term role in the energy mix even while the country boosts renewables -- targeted to be 82% by 2030.
Amid the current landscape and following the victory of the Australian Labor Party in federal elections, industry participants are calling for more investments, policy reforms and curbs on market intervention so that Australia retains its status as a reliable and dominant gas supplier.
