Initial capacity of 30,000 units/year
Production to begin in spring
Expansion to up to 400,000 units/year
Sustainable mobility company Lucid Motors has completed the first phase of the construction of its Lucid Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-1) factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, with production of its Lucid Air electric vehicle to start in spring 2021.
The carmaker said Dec. 1 that it was currently commissioning and testing production equipment and processes ahead of start of production, with the plant having an initial annual capacity of up to 30,000 units to supply global markets, beginning with North America.
Lucid Motors said it had already built its full beta prototype test fleet and was transitioning to the construction of a final series of production-representative versions of the Lucid Air.
The EV maker said the plant was designed for additional phases of expansion at the site, with the next phase of the plant expected to begin in early 2021, enabling future production of its first SUV under the name Project Gravity in 2023.
In its final form, the AMP-1 plant is expected to have an annual capacity of up to 400,000 units.
Lucid Motors CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson said construction of the plant, which is the first greenfield, dedicated EV factory built in North America, took just under a year
"We're already commissioning equipment compatible with the Lucid manufacturing system to start production of the next-generation EV, Lucid Air, in just a few months," Rawlinson said.
