Wind records tumble as storm hits Northwest Europe, with more to come

London — European wind turbines generated a record 109 GW Sunday afternoon as a powerful storm moved across Northwestern Europe, WindEurope data showed Monday.

Wind covered 27.4% of European power demand on the day, the 2.2 TWh generated averaging 92 GW through the day as storms Ciara/Sabine moved in from the Atlantic.

Total Week 6 wind output was down 24% on Week 5 due to a mid-week lull, with Friday's average down to 43 GW.

Wind was forecast to remain near record high levels for much of this week, according to spotrenewables, which pegged Germany above 40 GW through to Wednesday.

First indications showed European wind output peaking above 100 GW early Monday as the storm system moved east, data from German think-tank IWR showed.

Power prices fell sharply with Sunday baseload in Germany settling at Eur1.57/MWh amid widespread negative hourly prices stretching overnight into Monday.

Monday day-ahead power settled at Eur7.88/MWh and Tuesday at Eur11.62/MWh on Epex Spot.

Denmark, Finland and Sweden registered negative hourly prices with the Nordic system price around Eur10/MWh for both Sunday and Monday, NordPool data showed.

Average European wind generation this winter stands at around 62 GW, almost 10 GW greater year on year for week 48 to week 6.

There is over 200 GW of wind capacity installed across Europe.
