Tata launches Nexon EV in push to accelerate adoption in India

London — As part of a push to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India, Tata Motors launched the Nexon EV Tuesday, which it described as "India's own electric SUV."

During the 16-month development, Tata Motors collaborated with Tata Chemicals to develop the component supplier ecosystem, with the latter working on manufacturing lithium-ion battery cells, exploring active chemicals manufacturing and battery recycling.

The Nexon EV is the second of four EVs planned by Tata, with the Tigor EV released for general consumers in October 2019.

According to the specification sheet, the EV will be fueled by a 30.2-kWh lithium-ion battery and will have a 60-minute fast charging time and an eight-hour regular charging time.

Tata has also introduced its ZConnect app for use in the Nexon, which allows the user to remotely monitor the charge levels, available range, charging history and nearest charging and service stations.

The user will receive preferential access to over 300 charging stations across key metropolitan areas in India as part of an exclusive partnership with Tata Power.

Tata Motors CEO and managing director Guenter Butschek said the Nexon EV was a "high performance, connected vehicle...uniquely suited to address the aspirations of Indian customers, and making EVs mainstream."

All Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Autocomp, Tata Motors Finance and Croma, have been working together to create an e-mobility ecosystem, Tata uniEVerse.

Group chairman N Chandrasekaran said at the launch that the group companies, through Tata uniEVerse, had synchronized efforts to develop an holistic e-mobility ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of EVs in India.

"E-Mobility is an irreversible mega-trend and an imperative for addressing pollution and generating job opportunities in India," he said.
