Ridley Terminals' May coal exports jump 241% on month: Prince Rupert

Ridley Terminals in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, exported 577,894 mt of thermal and metallurgical coal in May, up 241% from April and down 50.2% from the year-ago month, Prince Rupert Port Authority data showed June 10.

Over the first five months of 2021, exports were down 36.2% from the year-ago period with nearly 2.9 million mt, and compared to the five-year average of 677,580 mt in May, exports were down 14.7%.

Met coal shipments in May totaled 504,792 mt, up 198% month on month and down 21.8% from the year-ago month. In the January-May period, exports were at 1.8 million mt, down 24.4% year on year.

Compared with zero thermal exports in April, May exports were at 73,102 mt. Over January-May, exports were approximately at 1.1 million mt, down 49.6% year on year.

Petcoke shipments totaled 153,597 mt, down 34.2% from April and up 28.5% from the year-ago period. Through May, exports were at 702,765 mt, up 26% year on year.
