Platts European Recycled Polypropylene Weekly Commentary

  • Tight supplies heard throughout value chain
  • Stock levels not expected to last long: source

The European recycled polypropylene market saw spot prices gain in the week ended Jan. 26 amid an acute shortage of material throughout the value chain.

"No bales, no flakes, no pellets are available," one recycler said, adding that this was particularly true for natural pellets.

This led to higher offers coming from recyclers in the week. Strong pricing was also seen in the post-consumer mixed PP bottle bale market. Although recyclers said that stock levels of feedstock were healthy, having spent the Christmas break restocking, this was not expected to last long considering the strong demand for pellets seen already by the end of January.

Platts European Recycled Polypropylene Weekly Rationale

S&P Global Platts assessed black recycled polypropylene pellets at Eur1,300/mt DDP Northwest Europe Jan. 26, up Eur50/mt on the day and on the week, moving in the direction of a recycler's range heard at Eur1,350-1,450/mt and an ex-works Poland offer, normalized to DDP NWE at Eur1,470/mt, pending corroboration of concluded deals at higher values.

Natural pellets were assessed at Eur1,875/mt DDP NWE, up Eur50/mt on the day and on the week, below an offer heard at Eur2,000/mt and maintaining a stable premium to black pellets.
