Energy Transition, Carbon
December 09, 2025
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, is proposing to include biochar credits certified under the Climate Action Reserve in its Biochar, US carbon credit current and year one price assessments, effective Feb. 2, 2026.
This proposal is in response to the growing number of US projects expected to come online in 2026, which will certify biochar carbon credits under Climate Action Reserve's US & Canada Biochar Protocol, found here.
Earlier in 2025, CAR's US and Canada Biochar Protocol V1.0 was approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market in accordance with the Core Carbon Principles Assessment Framework.
Currently, the Platts Biochar US price assessment reflects carbon credits sourced from US-based industrial projects that certify their carbon credits by the following registries and standards: Puro.earth, Isometric and CSI.
Under this proposal, Platts would change the specifications to consider carbon credits from CAR in its US biochar assessments. This change would better reflect evolving liquidity and buyer preferences in the market.
The assessments that would be impacted are as follows:
| Assessment Code | Current Assessment Description |
| ATCCA00 | Platts Biochar, US $/mtCO2e Current Year |
| ATCCB00 | Platts Biochar, US $/mtCO2e Yr01 |
