Platts launches carbon-intensity basket assessments for European biomethane GOs June 1

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, has launched daily price assessments for European biomethane guarantees of origin (GOs) that reflect negative carbon-intensity scores, effective June 1, 2026.

Under the EU's FuelEU Maritime regulation, ships calling at ports within the bloc and the European Economic Area are required to gradually reduce their ships' yearly greenhouse gas intensity, starting with a 2% reduction in 2025 and scaling up to an 80% reduction by 2050.

These requirements can be met, among other measures, by switching to alternative fuels, including biomethane with an appropriate carbon intensity.

Platts has launched the following daily price assessments:

Price assessment  Symbol Carbon intensity threshold
European Biomethane GOs minus 30 Current Year  Eur/MWh ASIZB00 minus 30g CO2e/MJ (plus/minus 5g CO2e/MJ)
European Biomethane GOs minus 50 Current Year Eur/MWh ASIZC00 minus 50g CO2e/MJ (plus/minus 10g CO2e/MJ)
European Biomethane GOs minus 85 and below Current Year Eur/MWh ASIZD00 minus 85g CO2e/MJ to minus 100g CO2e/MJ
European Biomethane GOs minus 30 Current Year Eur/MWh Monthly Average ASIZB03 minus 30g CO2e/MJ (plus/minus 5g CO2e/MJ)
European Biomethane GOs minus 50 Current Year Eur/MWh Monthly Average ASIZC03 minus 50g CO2e/MJ (plus/minus 10g CO2e/MJ)
European Biomethane GOs minus 85 and Below Current Year Eur/MWh Monthly Average ASIZD03 minus 85g CO2e/MJ to minus 100g CO2e/MJ

The assessments have the following specifications:

  • The assessments are feedstock-agnostic and reflect European GOs compliant with FuelEU.
  • Volume: Platts reflects a minimum volume threshold of 5GWh.
  • Units: The assessments are published in Eur/MWh.
  • Vintage: The spot assessments reflect transactions for immediate delivery, provided the contracts have a minimum validity of three months from the transaction date. The assessments reflect bids, offers and trades for contracts that remain valid for three months from the date of title transfer, with title transfer at the time of trade. For example, if Company A sold 5 GWh of Biomethane GOs to Company B on March 18, 2026, Company A would be able to deliver GOs of vintage June 2026 and later. The majority of biomethane GOs must be retired within 12 months of issuance.

The assessments consider market information reported to Platts and published as heards throughout the day, including firm bids and offers, trades, and indicative values, as well as any other data deemed relevant to the assessment process.

The assessments are published at 4:30 pm London time, following the UK holiday calendar.

These assessments are found on the fixed pages CLE2204, EVA2005, LNG0841, PEP1107, and PGN0876, as well as in the publications European Gas Daily, Carbon Markets Daily and RECs Daily.
