Brazil’s battery storage auctions put price on grid flexibility

Brazil is moving battery storage from policy discussion to market reality.

Two battery storage auctions scheduled for December 2026 could attract close to $4 billion in investment, according to the National Storage Systems Association.

The tenders are expected to contract up to 5 gigawatts of storage capacity, under 15-year agreements, with projects due to start delivering from 2028.

That scale would immediately put Brazil among Latin America’s leading storage markets, alongside Chile and Mexico. But the driver here is not aspiration alone: it’s grid pressure.

Wind and solar curtailments reached 26% of potential generation in July, exposing the limits of a system built faster on generation than on flexibility.

The auction design tries to address that directly, with location bonuses pushing batteries toward constrained substations in the Northeast and northern Minas Gerais.

The challenge is whether component supply, pricing, and curtailment regulation can give investors enough clarity to move at scale.

If they do, these auctions could do more than add batteries to the system - they could create a market signal for flexibility.
