300,000 mt/y plant to capture lime production emissions
Location allows delivery across US and internationally
California-based green cement producer Fortera plans to build its first commercial-scale facility in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, the company said Oct. 22.
In September, Fortera signed a partnership with Mississippi Lime Company (MLC) to develop its plant. Under the newly announced plans, Fortera will build a 300,000 mt/year cement plant at MLC's Ste. Genevieve production site. The facility is expected to capture carbon dioxide emitted from MLC's lime production operations at the site and turn it into low-carbon cement.
"Building alongside the largest lime operation in the Americas lets us turn an existing emissions stream into hundreds of thousands of tons of cement to meet demand that already exists," said Ryan Gilliam, CEO and co-founder of Fortera.
Fortera said the site was selected for its scale and location along the Mississippi River, which will enable deliveries across most of the US and internationally.
According to the company, its proprietary low-carbon ReAct cement reduces emissions by up to 70% compared to traditional cement production.
"The cement manufactured at the Ste. Genevieve plant is planned to be used across the Midwest, including by Ozinga, a fifth-generation, family-owned concrete and building materials company," said Fortera in a statement.
Fortera announced in December 2025 that its ReAct low-carbon cement met all six ASTM C1157 performance categories.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed Cement CIF Houston at $95.25/mt Oct. 15.
