NAIC summer 2026: President flags work on private credit, AI, homeowners
Regulators are adapting to emerging risks in the US insurance market, as demonstrated by their scrutiny of insurers' use of private credit and AI, and seeking deeper insights into homeowners insurance trends, according to Virginia Insurance Commissioner Scott White, president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
At the NAIC’s summer national meeting, White highlighted the insurance regulator's efforts to address private equity's growing influence on insurers, including creating standards for assessing investment risks and closer examination of credit ratings.
AI's expanding role in insurance is another focus, with the NAIC piloting an AI risk evaluation tool and developing a regulatory framework to strengthen oversight of third-party data and model vendors. This builds on its earlier adoption of AI principles and issuing an AI model bulletin.
Regarding homeowners insurance, White cited recent NAIC initiatives to address pressures from natural catastrophes, inflation and changing risk profiles. He said a new report with state-level data is expected to help distinguish broad trends from local challenges. Additional data will further enable regulators to assess mitigation programs, nonrenewal trends and coverage availability.

Listen: Spectrum, Stations, and Servers: Three Policy Shifts Reshaping TMT in 2026
In this episode of the "MediaTalk" podcast, S&P Global Market Intelligence's Stefan Modrich joined host Mike Reynolds to explore three major regulatory shifts reshaping the tech, media and telecom landscape.
First, the US Federal Communications Commission plans to auction 160 megahertz of upper C-band spectrum by July 2027 — the first such auction in years. This midband spectrum is expected to boost 5G and fixed wireless services, with commercial rollouts anticipated in major markets by 2030.
Second, the FCC's repeal of the long-standing 39% national cap on TV station ownership could spark a wave of consolidation in local broadcasting. However, this move faces antitrust scrutiny and potential legal challenges.
Third, communities across the US are pushing back on data center development. From Wisconsin to New York, local governments and voters are enacting moratoriums, citing concerns over electricity costs, grid reliability and resource allocation.
With midterm elections on the horizon, these issues are central to political campaigns. The question remains: Will mounting political pressure drive lasting policy changes?

Listen: Claw and Agentic Optimization
AI adoption has surged in recent years, but the introduction of OpenClaw agent technology in November 2025 accelerated this trend even further. In this episode of the "Next in Tech" podcast, Jean Atelsek and Melissa Incera, analysts at 451 Research by S&P Global, joined host Eric Hanselman to explore the rapid rise of agent adoption and the resulting challenges for enterprises.
The conversation emphasized how the proliferation of agents is putting pressure on enterprise infrastructure — exceeding the demands seen during earlier waves of AI adoption. Organizations now face the complex task of harnessing agentic power to foster innovation while maintaining control and security over their operations.
Effective use of agents demands careful management of data access, context and memory within agent workflows, as well as robust security protocols. Headlines have highlighted the chaos caused by poorly managed agents. Ultimately, enterprises must strike a balance between unlocking the potential of agent-driven innovation and mitigating the associated risks.
