As anticipated demand growth generates favorable conditions for natural gas generation, it is essential to recognize that investments in new generation technologies still entail considerable risks. Rising demand typically benefits all types of generation, making it improbable that advantages will be disproportionately realized by the gas sector. For instance, the recent uptick in natural gas prices has created a favorable environment for competitive renewable generation, which already benefits from substantial federal and state policy support. Furthermore, declining costs in solar and energy storage technologies signal the potential for significant economic competition among these asset classes. Investments characterized by high and volatile costs, such as offshore wind, have recently demonstrated the associated risks. Analysts from the Market Intelligence Power Forecast will delve deeper into these trends.
