Novel and promising, but bottlenecked: Q4 2026 Supply Chain Outlook (APAC)

Heading into 2027 there will be subtle changes in the key challenges facing supply chain decision-makers and while the promise of AI enablement could prove transformative, it comes with costs and risks. Join our supply chain research specialists as we discuss the issues that matter for the rest of 2026 and into 2027:

• Trade policy features novelty factors: US trade policy after the Trump-Xi summit and mid-term elections likely to focus on the US increasing its use of novel non-tariff measures including bans, price floors and regulatory controls. USMCA will remain unresolved. Mainland China will likely roll out more anti-involution policies and may resolve its relations with the EU. There will be final updates to EUDR and CBAM as well as the ratification in 2027 of trade deals with India and the Mercosur. The GCC group has the outside chance of signing deals with India and China once conflict subsides.
• AI promises come at a price: AI costs are still escalating with a knock-on effect for the rest of the semiconductor sector. The application of AI software in supply chains continues to be rolled out, but many firms are still early in their journey and will have to reckon with implementation complexities, costs and security challenges. Physical AI in the form of drones is becoming prevalent, while humanoid and high dexterity robots only an issue for 2028 and beyond.
• Auditing the bottlenecks: A recovery of trade activity after policy-related disruptions remains possible in 2027, however bottlenecks remain. There is little sign of peace in the Middle East or Ukraine so Hormuz, the Red Sea and the Black Sea will remain under-utilized. El Nino will bite the Panama and Canal other inland waterways as well as agricultural supply chains. There’s also upward pressure on costs from fuel prices to deal with, while the container industry still faces a capacity reckoning.
