Listen: The Resilience Imperative
In this episode of the “Look Forward “podcast, host Naki Mendoza spoke with Lindsey Hall, global head of thought leadership at S&P Global Energy Horizons, about why "resilience" is the anchor theme of the new edition of S&P Global's Sustainability Quarterly. Together, they unpacked how the language has evolved from ESG to sustainability to resilience, and what S&P Global's research shows about energy scenarios, climate adaptation planning and exposure to climate hazards.
The “Look Forward” podcast is powered by the S&P Global Institute. The S&P Global Institute is the center for thought leadership from across S&P Global on the trends reshaping markets, industries and the global economy.
Global Economy
GCC economies demonstrate resilience in August
Latest non-oil Purchasing Managers' Index data pointed to increasing signs of recovery and resilience among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) economies. Growth of output and new orders gathered pace, and companies saw improved delivery lead times as they adapted their supply chains to changing circumstances. The outlook for the year ahead also brightened midway through the third quarter, despite geopolitical uncertainty.
Four of the six GCC economies — Saudia Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar — are currently covered by Purchasing Managers' Index data, the exceptions being Bahrain and Oman. Aggregating the data for the economies that S&P Global covers gives an insight into the performance of the whole region. GCC business activity increased rapidly in August, at a pace only just shy of that seen in February, before the outbreak of war in the region. Similarly, new orders also rose sharply, and business confidence hit a six-month high amid hopes that companies will be better able to focus on sales generation if regional tensions abate.
Artificial Intelligence
Smart glasses and AI in the US: Benefits and opportunities
Through a third-quarter survey of 2,532 US online adults, S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan found that more than four in 10 respondents said they were interested in or owned a pair of smart glasses.
When combined with AI, smart glasses evolve from a connected device into an everyday assistant. Early adopters report benefits that extend beyond communication and content capture, including productivity gains, creative support and accessibility features. S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan’s findings suggest smart glasses reduce the inertia between seeking and accessing information while allowing people to remain more engaged with the world around them.
