Justin Smith is a Principal Research Associate on the Upstream Capital Cost Service team with a specific focus on offshore rigs. He started his career in 2006 as a news reporter with ODS-Petrodata prior to its acquisition by IHS, and later worked for  World Oil magazine writing about the offshore sector. Upon his return to the Petrodata group in 2012, Justin began to exclusively cover the offshore rig market for the Petrodata Rigs database and writing for the  Americas Rigs Petrodaily newswire, and he was the managing editor of  World Rig Forecast: Short Term Trends and managed the Americas team. He moved to the Upstream Capital Cost Service group in mid-2023 to cover the offshore rig market with an emphasis on trends and longer term forecasting. Justin has a BS degree in agricultural journalism from Texas A&M University.
