Amazon India to open 5 more fulfillment sites, expand logistics

Amazon.com Inc.'s Indian unit plans to bolster its back-end services through the launch of five more fulfillment centers and the expansion of its logistics team, the Economic Times of India reported July 5, citing an interview with Amazon India's Vice President of customer fulfillment Akhil Saxena.

Amazon India will open new fulfillment centers in the coming weeks, where merchants can store their products before they are packed and delivered through Amazon Transportation Services and other courier partners, Saxena told the newspaper.

The company on July 4 opened a new 140,000-square-foot fulfillment center in West Bengal, its third in the state and one of the five announced for 2018. The launch of the new fulfillment site in West Bengal came ahead of Amazon's Prime Day 2018 on July 16. The facility has a storage capacity of more than 1 million cubic feet to hold items for over 8,500 sellers in the state.

Amazon India said it will cap off the year with 67 operational fulfillment centers, compared to 41 in 2017. It will also expand the number of its delivery stations to prepare for the upcoming festive shopping sales, Saxena told ET.

The online retailer will also work to expand the Prime offerings for Diwali sales in India, according to the report.

Amazon India recently rolled out a monthly plan for its Prime membership program in the country.
