Coal employee fatality reported near Alpha Natural Resources mine in West Virginia

A coal mine employee died in a vehicle accident early onSept. 23 after his shift ended near an Alpha Natural Resources Inc. mine in West Virginia'sRaleigh County.

Matthew Davis was fatally injured near the Slip Ridge CedarGrove mine while traveling with his friend and co-worker Billy Ballengee. Thelatter was injured but survived in the accident.

"Matt Davis was a shuttle car operator with more than adecade of service," company spokesperson Steve Hawkins told S&P GlobalMarket Intelligence. "He will be missed. CEO David Stetson and the ANRteam send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Donna, and the Davis andBallengee families and friends."

The incident represents the eighth fatality reported by MSHAthis year and the fourth in West Virginia.

Slip Ridge produced about 96,000 tons of coal in the secondquarter of 2016.
