1st turbine generates power at floating wind farm off Portugal

The first of three turbines at the WindFloat Atlantic floating wind farm off the Portuguese coast of Viana do Castelo was successfully connected to the grid on Dec. 31, 2019.

The wind farm is now able to supply power generated by an 8.4-MW turbine. The other two units will be connected successively, until they reach a total installed capacity of 25 MW. Once fully operational, the wind farm will be able to generate enough electricity for about 60,000 users every year.

The commissioning contributes towards the diversification of energy supply, provides access to an untapped offshore wind resource and represents a technological leap towards a carbon-free economy in Portugal, according to a Jan. 2 news release.

The project is being developed by Windplus, a consortium made up of EDP Renováveis SA, Engie SA, Repsol SA and Principle Power Inc.
