Adani secures key environmental approval for Carmichael coal mine

Adani Enterprises Ltd.'s plan to protect the endangered black-throated finch at the Carmichael coal mine in Queensland, Australia, was approved by the state's Department of the Environment and Science.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk — who was said to be "fed up" with the delays over the approvals for Carmichael — had set a May 31 deadline for the approval of the management plan for the endangered species and for a decision on the mine's water management plan, expected June 13.

The water management plan is the last permit the company needs to start construction at the project.

The Minerals Council of Australia welcomed the approval, saying the move allows for creating jobs, strengthening regional communities in central Queensland and developing the North Galilee Basin.
