Queensland, Australia's Environment and Heritage Protection department fined Adani Enterprises Ltd. affiliate Abbot Point Bulk Coal Pty. Ltd. A$12,190 for breaching conditions of a temporary emissions license at its Abbot Point coal terminal during Tropical Cyclone Debbie on March 27.

The department handed down the penalty July 20 for the unauthorized storm water release from the coal-handling facility, according to an Aug. 11 news release.

Abbot Point Bulk Coal was granted a temporary license during the cyclone to allow the release of the storm water at the 100-milligram-per-liter elevated suspended solid limit during heavy rainfalls.

However, the company informed the department that the release of storm water containing suspended solids from the terminal to the surrounding marine waters was recorded at 806 milligrams per liter.

The Adani subsidiary has until Aug. 17 to decide whether to contest the penalty in court. The environment watchdog added that the release did not enter the adjacent Caley Valley wetlands and its investigation is ongoing.
