Heartland Financial names consumer banking head; Fannie Mae adds 2 directors

Los Angeles-based City National Bank promoted Verna Chao to executive vice president and head of the bank's treasury services division.

Chao has been general manager of Datafaction Inc. for the past two years. She will succeed the retiring James Daley, who was appointed executive vice president of the treasury services division in July 2008.

City National Bank and Datafaction are subsidiaries of Royal Bank of Canada.


Dubuque, Iowa-based Heartland Financial USA Inc. named Kevin Karrels executive vice president and head of consumer banking.

Karrels recently served as senior vice president and digital channel executive of consumer banking at First Tennessee Bank NA, a unit of First Horizon National Corp.


Columbus, Ga.-based Synovus Bank named Katherine Weislogel executive director of treasury and payment solutions.

Weislogel was managing director and team leader of BMO Harris Bank NA's U.S. commercial treasury and payments solutions business in Columbus, Ohio.

Financial services

Daniel Kaye and Phyllis Lockett were nominated for election as directors of CME Group Inc. at the company's May 8 annual shareholders meeting.

Kaye served as interim CFO and treasurer of HealthEast Care System until May 2014. Lockett is the founding CEO of nonprofit organization LEAP Innovations.


Brian Brooks and Karin Kimbrough were elected to the board of Fannie Mae.

Brooks is the chief legal officer of Coinbase Inc. He was executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Fannie Mae until September 2018.

The Fannie Mae board determined that Kimbrough is an independent director. She has been an assistant treasurer for Google since October 2017.
