Facebook Inc. is considering an arrangement that allows it to review content that could be seen as problematic and lead to violence in India, The Economic Times (India) reported Aug. 11, citing people aware of the matter.

The social media giant is reportedly weighing "outsourcing" as an option to filter content and is speaking to a number of third party agencies. This includes IT company arvato AG which already works with Facebook to sieve content in Germany.

The decision comes at a time the Indian government is finalizing a policy that will allow it to request social media platforms to take down content in a bid to curb the spread of rumors in the country.

Recently, a spate of mob lynchings linked to messages circulated on WhatsApp Inc. groups in India had prompted the government to issue a warning to the messaging platform. Subsequently, WhatsApp announced that it is limiting the number of times a message can be forwarded in India to five.
