Facebook Inc. will construct a data center in Odense, Denmark, Reuters reported Jan. 19.

The facility will be the social networking giant's third data center outside the U.S., following data centers in Luleå, Sweden; and Clonee, Ireland. Niall McEntegart, Facebook's director of data center operations for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, said the center will run on renewable energy, with the cold climate expected to help cool data servers instead of depending on air conditioners. It will house two large data buildings, an administration and logistics building, and other technical facilities.

McEntegart added that the facility would cost more than $100 million, and is expected to create 150 jobs when it becomes operational in 2020, according to the report, citing Fyens.dk.

In October 2016, Facebook purchased a 500-square-meter tract of land on Odense's outskirts, without stating plans for the site.
