Support vessel provider Seacat Services has been contracted, with the first of two vessels starting preparatory work this winter in the Greater Wash off the Lincolnshire coast of England, Innogy said.

"Triton Knoll will be the next major offshore wind construction project to enter UK waters when the first components are installed next year, and has already made significant progress during the installation of the onshore electrical system," the company said.

Once fully operational -- expected late 2021 or early 2022 -- Triton Knoll will be capable of supplying over 800,000 typical UK households, the developer said.

Assuming average annual UK household consumption of 4,100 kWh, the wind farm could produce 3.38 TWh/yr. Total UK generation last year amounted to 339 TWh.

Triton Knoll is jointly owned by Innogy (59%), J-power (24%) and Kansai Electric Power (16%), with Innogy managingconstruction out of Grimsby's Royal Dock.

The project has a 15-year power purchase agreement with Denmark's Orsted. In September 2017 it was awarded a 15-year contract for difference subsidy for delivery in three phases starting 2021/22 at a strike price of GBP74.75/MWh ($91.5/MWh).

MHI Vestas has been selected to provide 90 x 9.5-MW V164 turbines. Siemens T&D is the main contractor for substation work. Total project cost has been put at around GBP2 billion.

HUGE OFFSHORE ADDS

At a more advanced stage of construction, meanwhile, are Hornsea One (the 1.2 GW project involved in the August 9 UK blackout) and East Anglia One (714 MW), both due to be fully operational in 2020 and forecast to produce a combined 7-8 TWh/yr.

Foundations are going in at the 950 MW Moray East, while moving towards construction is Orsted's 1.4 GW Hornsea Two project, destined to be the largest offshore wind farm in the world, with a scheduled completion date of the second half of 2022. The two projects will add at least 8 TWh/yr to the mix.
