Midwest Crop Tour: Corn yield estimates in Indiana, Nebraska seen down on year

New Delhi — On the day two of the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour, it has projected average corn yields in six districts of Indiana at 161.46 bushels per acre for the marketing year 2019-2020 (September-August), down 11.4% year on year, Platts Analytics said in its report.

The US Department of Agriculture's yield forecast for the region is 166 bu/acre, which is down 12.2% on the year.

The 11.4% drop in yield estimates in Indiana compares favorably to the 12.2% drop [estimated by USDA] in August Crop Production report, said Peter Meyer, Head of Grain and Oilseed Analytics at Platts Analytics.

At 161.46 bu/acre, the yield estimate for Indiana is also lower than the three year average of 175.81 bu/acre, and five-year average of 168.03 bu/acre.

Crop condition in West Central Indiana was better than that of eastern part of the state, the report said. However they were still far from ideal, it added.

According to the report, timely or early frost in eastern Indiana may lead to further downward revisions in the state's yield estimates.

Planting of corn was delayed in most parts of the US by two-three weeks due to inclement weather, making the crop vulnerable to frost conditions towards the end of the season.

The scouts are to spend another day in Indiana but by and large most scouts said they were very disappointed in corn yields for the eastern part of the state, said Meyer.

For Nebraska, the Crop tour estimated yield in nine districts of the state to be at 172.55 bu/acre, down 3.7% on the year, but higher than the three-year average of 168.97 bu/acre. USDA's estimate for the region is at 186 bu/acre, which is down 3.1% from last year's yield estimates.

Damage from wind or hail in Nebraska, which is fairly normal in the state was not seen at this time, the report said.

In its monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for August, USDA estimated the yield for 2019-2020 (September-August) US corn would be 169.5 bu/acre, compared with a 166 bu/acre estimate in the July WASDE. The market expectation for corn yields in the US was at 164.9 bu/acre.

The Crop tour's full state results for corn yield projection for Illinois and the western part of Iowa will be released on Wednesday, the report said.
