Comcast Corp.'s Comcast Cable is looking to launch two substantially African-American-owned, independent networks in select Comcast markets by January 2019 and the company has started accepting proposals.
The launch of the two networks is part of the company's pledge to launch independently owned and operated networks as part of a series of public interest commitments made by Comcast in connection with the NBCUniversal Media LLC transaction in 2011. Additionally, Comcast Cable systems will launch two substantially Hispanic American-owned networks, Kids Central and Primo TV, in January 2017.
In May, the company won the dismissal of a racial-discrimination lawsuit filed by the National Association of African-American Owned Media that accused Comcast of refusing to contract with 100% African-American-owned media companies, and not distributing any channels that were owned and operated by 100% African-American-owned media, except the Africa Channel.
