Community Health to sell South Carolina health facilities

Community Health Systems Inc. agreed to sell Mary Black Health System to Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in South Carolina.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2018, subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

Mary Black Health operates a 207-bed hospital in Spartanburg, S.C. and a 125-bed hospital in Gaffney, S.C. and clinics and outpatients services.

Community Health units also agreed to divest Mary Black Health System's related businesses, which include its physician clinic operations and outpatient services.

Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health said it will continue operating four South Carolina hospitals when the transaction closes. Community Health has been divesting its businesses as it pays off a $262 million settlement for criminal charges brought by the U.S. Justice Department.
