Report: Officials from NY, Chicago question Amazon's way of selecting neighborhoods for service launches

Elected officials from New York and Chicago have raised concernsabout how Amazon.com Inc.decides which neighborhoods will receive its same-day delivery service, BloombergNews reported April 28.

In a letter to the company's CEO Jeff Bezos, Bronx, N.Y., BoroughPresident Ruben Diaz Jr. asked him to bring the same-day delivery service to theBronx, as it is the only New York borough that the online retailer is not currentlyserving, adding that its constituents largely comprise black and Latino ethnic groups.

Meanwhile, New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz askedfederal and state regulators to investigate how the company selects which neighborhoodsto serve. Also, Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., called for an investigation by the U.S.Federal Trade Commission.

Representatives for the company, however, said race is not afactor in determining how Amazon.com rolls out its services.
