Bowie Refined Coal LLC abandoned its Wellington Dry Coal Cleaning Plant in Utah still contaminated with coal waste, leaving state and local authorities to fix the mess and recover fines and taxes from the company, The Salt Lake Tribune reported May 28, citing documents from the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining.
The division filed papers in April to seize Bowie Refined Coal's $732,000 reclamation bond and collect the fines and penalties related to the company's violations of Utah's Coal Act.
Bowie Refined Coal did not file any reply to the state's request for fines.
The Utah Oil, Gas and Mining board will hear in June the division's claim filed April 10 that the abandoned 30-acre facility could pose a threat to the environment and the community.
