Total U.S. nuclear plant availability returned above the 97% level early Aug. 11 to 97.03%, up from 96.67% on Aug. 10 but still lower than the 98.31% posted on the same day in 2016.
Giving a small push to total output was the restart of two units. Dominion Energy Inc.'s Surry 1 reactor in Virginia was warming up at 1% early Aug. 11 after being taken offline late Aug. 9 owing to a reactor coolant system leakage. In addition, Vistra Energy Corp.'s Comanche Peak 2 in Texas was restarted and running at 2% early Aug. 11 after being shut on June 6 for undisclosed reasons.
In addition, the Nine Mile Point 2 plant in New York, which is owned by Exelon Corp., EDF Group and Long Island Power Authority, was operating at full power early Aug. 11, rising from 17% the day prior.
