Report: Amazon plans to directly stock, sell products in Brazil

Amazon.com Inc. plans to directly stock and sell products, such as consumer electronics and perfume, in Brazil, Reuters reported March 8, citing two sources close to the development.

The move could potentially expand the e-commerce giant's existing role as a marketplace for third-party sellers in the country.

Amazon held meetings with several manufacturers in the week of Feb. 26 to discuss its plans, the report added, citing the sources who attended the meetings. According to one of the sources, the company's representatives, including senior executive Ticiana Mártyres, reportedly informed potential suppliers that it plans to use its own transportation and call centers across the country.

One of the sources told the news outlet that Amazon representatives said the company is "going to buy directly from the manufacturers and resell."

The company is making efforts to establish itself as a prominent player in Brazil's online retail market. It expanded its product offering in the country in 2017, and it also was planning to lease a large warehouse outside São Paulo in February.
