Duke EnergyCorp. has agreed to pay a $6 million civil under a settlement with NorthCarolina environmental regulators tied to the February 2014 coal ash spill at its now-retired plant.
The settlement also requires Duke to excavate and close theDan River facility's coal ash ponds by Aug. 1, 2019, according to a Sept. 23state Department of Environmental Quality news release.
Duke Energy is required to all of its coal ash ponds by 2029and provide permanent alternative water supplies to residents around coal ashfacilities by the fall of 2018.
