Report: Pepsi to relaunch 'Slice' brand in India

Beverage company PepsiCo Inc. is looking to reintroduce Slice in India as a carbonated juice drink with different local flavors, Indian news outlet Livemint reported March 15.

Slice was discontinued in the U.S. in the 2000s, the report said. The drink is being sold as a mango juice in India since it was launched in the country in 1993.

According to the report, the drink will be priced at 12 Indian rupees for a 250 milliliter PET bottle and will be 30% cheaper than Pepsi's other carbonated and noncarbonated drinks in India.

Vipul Prakash, PepsiCo India's senior vice president, said new local flavors will be added to the brand. The drink will have mainstream flavors, such as apples and oranges, but will also have "ethnic favorites" such as jeera and guava chili.

This move is not dissimilar to rival beverage company Coca-Cola Co.'s decision to use local flavors to push its brand in different states in India.

Livemint also reported that PepsiCo will gain more of the market share in rural and semi-urban areas with lower prices.
