Indian online retailer Flipkart Online Services Pvt. Ltd. on Aug. 29 said it plans to phase out single-use plastic by introducing renewable alternatives and collecting plastic waste from consumers.
The Walmart Inc.-owned e-commerce company said that as part of this initiative, it will roll out eco-friendly paper shreds, replace poly pouches with recycled paper bags, and replace bubble wraps and airbags with carton waste shredded material, among other steps.
It is also aiming to collect about 30% of its plastic waste from customers by the end of 2019. The company said it filed for extended producer responsibility with the government, which will allow it to handle materials from its production process even after sale and disposal.
Flipkart is looking to move toward 100% recycled plastic consumption by March 2021, according to the release. As of Aug. 1, the company said it already reduced its single-use plastic by 25%.
