Regulators OK Nova Scotia Power's C$133M smart metering program

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board approved Nova Scotia Power Inc.'s plan to install smart meters.

The C$133 million project will upgrade Nova Scotia Power's existing analog and digital meters to smart meters at no additional cost to customers, according to a June 12 news release. Once the new smart meter network is up and running, customers will experience benefits such as access to more information about their daily energy use, more efficient power restoration during outages and more accurate billing.

The Emera Inc. utility estimates the smart metering program will save approximately C$38 million over the next 20 years. The company plans to spend the next year building and testing the secure communication network as part of the project, with the smart meter installation rollout scheduled to begin in late 2019.
