Report: Apple giving refunds for LTE smartwatch in China

Owners of Apple Inc.'s Watch Series 3 with LTE in China will be able to return the product beyond the 14-day return policy, Technode reported Dec. 19.

The cellular connectivity of the Apple Watch, which allows users to make voice calls, receive data and SMS without a wireless connection to an iPhone, was suspended in China in September without any timeframe for the resumption of service.

Industry analysts earlier said the suspension is due to the Chinese government's security concerns as it uses a different technology. The latest Apple Watch poses a risk to the country's existing user identification system, as China strictly regulates mobile devices, with all three major telco providers being state-controlled companies.

The Apple Watch Series 3 cellular support site has been updated to show that carriers China Mobile Ltd., China Telecom Corp. Ltd. and China Unicom will offer LTE support for the device in 2018, the report said.
