Android Pay, Google Inc.'s mobile wallet service, has launched in Japan, the company said in a Dec. 12 blog post.
The Alphabet Inc. unit partnered with Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten Inc. to let Android handset owners in Japan pay transactions at more than 470,000 locations in the country that accept Rakuten Edy, a prepaid e-money service.
Google also plans to work with FeliCa Networks, the RFID smart card system from Sony Corp., to provide support for additional e-money services and traditional payment companies including Visa, MasterCard and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.
