Thai telecoms regulator to lose autonomous status

Thailand'sregulatory body National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission willnow be reporting to the new Digital Economy Commission, weakening its regulatorypower, Telecom Asia reported April 25.

The change took effect after Thailand's military cabinetapproved the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Act.

According to the legislation, the NBTC is required to followthe policies of the DE Commission, as well as follow the government's policystatement. The prime minister will act as chair of the newly established DECommission.

The NBTC will no longer be in charge of satellite andorbital slots, among other things. Also, the DE Commission now has the finalsay on disputes concerning NBTC.
