Kroger to halt gun sales to buyers under 21 at its Fred Meyer stores

Kroger Co. will no longer sell guns to anyone under the age of 21 at its Fred Meyer stores, CNBC reported March 1, citing a statement from the grocer.

Kroger becomes the third major U.S. retailer to restrict firearms sales in the wake of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla. Both Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. and Walmart Inc. announced similar measures Feb. 28.

"Recent events demonstrate the need for additional action on the part of responsible gun retailers. We are raising the minimum age to 21 to purchase firearms and ammunition in all of our Fred Meyer locations that sell firearms," Kroger said in its statement, CNBC reported.

Kroger said it stopped selling assault-style rifles in its Oregon, Washington and Idaho Fred Meyer stores several years ago and longer accepts special orders of these weapons in Alaska.

"As we refresh stores we are often transitioning gun departments due to softer demand and changing customer preferences," Kroger said in the statement.

Kroger could not be immediately reached for comment by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
