Justice Department drops ACA individual market-related claim in Anthem-Cigna merger suit

The U.S. Department of Justice will no longer pursue itsclaim that the pending merger between Anthem Inc. and Cigna Corp. would negatively impact competition in theAffordable Care Act individual health insurance market, the Hartford Courant reported, citing aletter filed in a federal court in Washington, D.C.

The lawsuit that the department filed to block the merger willpush through but the argument will focus on its impact on the commercial healthinsurance market and healthcare services in 35 local markets.

The news outlet reported that the department did notdiscount the possibility of filing a separate lawsuit or pursuing anadministrative proceeding regarding the impact of the merger on the healthcarelaw.
