Payrolls jump by 287,000 in June, unemployment rate ticks up to 4.9%

Nonfarmpayroll employment surged by 287,000 in June, while the unemployment rate edgedup to 4.9%, according to the U.S. Labor Department's latest employment report.

Theconsensus estimate for month-over-month job gains was an increase of 180,000jobs, according to Econoday data made available by Bloomberg. The unemploymentrate was expected to hold at 4.8%.
