Monday's Energy Stocks: SunPower gains 10.67%

Broader benchmarks finished in positive territory on Monday, Dec. 11, while energy markets posted a mixed day.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.23% to close at 24,386.03, and the S&P 500 hiked 0.32% to close at 2,659.99. The SNL Energy Index notched a win, adding 0.90% to finish the day at 292.63.

The SNL Merchant Generator Index grew 0.73% to close at 104.56.

NRG Energy Inc. stock added 3.12% to close at $29.13 on thin volume. The power producer closed the sale of $870 million of its 5.75% senior unsecured notes due Jan. 15, 2028, in late hours before the weekend.

In the renewable industry, SunPower Corp. jumped 10.67%, reaching $9.23 at market close on more than double the average volume. Robert W. Baird & Co. upgraded SunPower's shares to "outperform" from "neutral."

Canadian Solar Inc also advanced. Chairman, President and CEO Shawn Qu proposed to Canadian Solar's board of directors to take the company private by offering to acquire all of the company's outstanding common shares for a cash consideration of $18.47 per share. Canadian Solar shares close the session 3.13% higher at $17.79 on high volume.

Sunrun Inc. shares increased 1.22% to $5.80 on slim volume. TerraForm Power Inc lost 1.41% to close at $11.21 on light volume.

In the midstream sector, Southwestern Energy Co. shares spiked 5.83% to finish the day at $5.81 on average volume. CVR Refining, LP shares added 3.47% to close at $13.40, MPLX LP stock grew 3.78% to finish at $37.06 and NGL Energy Partners LP increased 2.89% to $14.25; all three traded on above-average volumes.

Western Refining Logistics LP shares lost 1.85% to close at $23.85 on heavy volume and Dominion Energy Midstream Partners LP shed 0.47% to $31.70 at market close on light volume.

The SNL Midstream Energy Index closed 1.63% higher at 106.62.

In the electric utility sector, Eversource Energy gained 0.74% on about average volume to close at $65.70, after S&P Global Ratings upgraded its issuer credit ratings on the company and all of its subsidiaries to "A+" from "A."

Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. decreased 0.11% to close at $37.85 on slow volume. Edison International grew 1.64% to finish the day at $72.98 on above-average volume.

The SNL Electric Company Index increased 0.43% to close at 506.57.

In gas utilities, Northwest Natural Gas Co. shares trimmed 2.75% to close at $65.35 on above-average volume, ONE Gas Inc. stock decreased 0.92% to $76.79 on average volume and New Jersey Resources Corp. shares slid 0.92% to close a slow day at $43.20.

The SNL Gas Utility Index decreased 0.30% to 615.48 at session's end.

In coal, Peabody Energy Corp. and Warrior Met Coal Inc. ushered the SNL Coal Index 1.57% higher to 65.97 at market close. Peabody Energy shares increased 2.77% in value to $35.19 in heavy trading and Warrior Met Coal stock added 0.96% to finish an active session at $24.13.

NYMEX January 2018 natural gas futures ended higher, rising more than 5 cents, with gains driven by technical buying amid oversold conditions and solid weather-side support. Trading from $2.793/MMBtu to $2.848/MMBtu on the session, front-month January 2018 natural gas settled at $2.828/MMBtu, up 5.6 cents.
