OCC publishes examiner guidance on student loans

The OCC on May 9 issued examiner guidance on the evaluation ofbanks that are engaged in private student lending.

Among other things, examiners are directed to review internalrisk assessments as well as policies, procedures and reports banks use to overseetheir student lending. Examiners should also evaluate the expected performance ofthe loan portfolio, review a bank's collection department reports and activitiesto ascertain how these might possibly impact credit quality, and conduct on-sitetransaction testing for verification of adherence to policies.
