Eni CEO denies taking part in Eni Congo, Petroservice deals

Eni SpA CEO Claudio Descalzi denied he was involved in transactions between Eni Congo SA and Petroservice AS after an allegation was made he failed to disclose a potential conflict of interest.

The allegation was made in a warranty notice from the prosecution office in Milan, according to a Sept. 26 news release from Eni.

"The transactions between Eni Congo and the company Petroservice were never the subject of my consideration and decision, as fully outside my role," Descalzi said in the statement.

Descalzi is being accused of not disclosing the fact that his wife, Marie Magdalena Ingoba, was behind Petroservice, which benefited from nearly $105 million worth of contracts with Eni from 2012 to 2017, according to a Sept. 26 article from Reuters, citing a source close to the matter.

Eni said prior investigations initiated by the company proved the contracts with Petroservice were awarded in a competitive framework and were based on existing tendering procedures. Eni said the result of the investigations were released to the prosecutors.

The investigations excluded any breaches and behaviors in favor or against Eni that could have benefited service suppliers. The investigations were outsourced by its controlling committees to independent, third-party legal and technical consultants, Eni said.
