The U.S. House of Representatives passed a defense policy bill for fiscal 2019 that imposes penalties on Chinese telecommunications firm ZTE Corp.
Lawmakers voted 351-66 to approve the measure, which would ban U.S. government agencies from using technology manufactured by ZTE, Bloomberg News reported. The bill would also prohibit the Department of Defense from renewing contracts with vendors working with the Chinese company.
ZTE ceased its major operating activities as a result of trade restrictions imposed by the U.S. Department of Commerce in April.
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump floated the possibility of imposing a fine of more than $1 billion on ZTE and requiring changes in its management, as Washington and Beijing continued negotiations over trade issues.
