Canada's unemployment rate holds steady in September

Canada's unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.2% in September, matching the low of October 2008, the country's statistical office said.

Total employment for September rose to 18.45 million, up from 18.44 million in August. Employment in the educational services increased by 20,000 in September, mostly in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The number of people working for the wholesale and retail trade industry increased by 17,000, and employment in Canada's public sector rose by 26,000.

The information, culture and recreation industry shed 24,000 jobs in September.

Ontario recorded its fourth overall gain in five months, adding 35,000 in September. The unemployment rate in the province was little changed at 5.6%.
