Basel softens capital requirements for higher-quality securitized debt

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has eased plannedcapital standards for higher-quality debt under its incoming framework onsecuritizations.

The final standards, which will take effect in January 2018,include a risk weightfloor for senior exposures of 10%, down from the previously proposed 15%.

"This ensures that securitizations with higher-riskunderlying exposures do not qualify for the same capital treatment as simple, transparent and comparable-compliant transactions," the committee saidJuly 11, adding that it had taken note of comments received duringconsultations on the new rules.
