Walmart to extend grocery delivery to more than 100 metro areas

Walmart Inc. on March 14 announced plans to extend its online grocery delivery service to over 100 metropolitan areas across the U.S. by 2018-end, capturing more than 40% of the country's households through the program.

The service, which costs $9.95 and requires a minimum order of $30, will offer delivery of groceries including fresh produce, meat, seafood, staples and consumables as soon as the same day. Customers can place their orders through the big-box retailer's portal Walmart.com/grocery or through its grocery app.

The company, headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., added that the program will be enabled by 18,000 Walmart-trained personal shoppers and crowd-sourced delivery providers with plans of employing "thousands more" within 2018.

The retailer, which operates Sam's Club in the U.S. and ASDA Stores Ltd. in the U.K., also plans to expand its order-online, pickup-in-store service, which is available in 1,200 stores, to 1,000 more Walmart outlets during the year.

Amazon.com Inc., Walmart's local e-commerce rival, on Feb. 8 also began offering a free, two-hour grocery delivery service from its Whole Foods Market Inc. chain to Prime Now subscribers from select areas, aiming to extend the program across the U.S. in 2018.
